Design Competition Winners!

by Shhh! Couture on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 10:01pm

I am SO EXCITED about this competition! I think you'll all agree with me that the entries have been phenomenal. As such, it's been far too difficult to choose one collection. I have spent the last few hours debating with my guest judges - we have come to the decision that there will be two winners! :D (Though to be honest I would have loved to work with everyone that entered the competition!)

So...

The two competition winners are -

Hayley Sharman and Janine Basil.

Each collection is so brilliant, that I couldn't possibly choose between the two. They are completely different and so unique. Shhh! Couture is so proud to have these two designers and their mini collections as part of the brand.

Hayley and Janine - I'll be emailing you both over the weekend so we can get things moving :D

I hope everyone is as excited as I am about these collaborations.

One last thank you to everyone who entered, and to everyone that has commented and given their opinions on the designs. It's really appreciated :)

The Davenport shop of originality.

On Thursday I took part in a live fashion show
I was invited to show my garments
by Pash of Style Creative who had joined
with Sarah Davenport to hold
the event.
The day consisted of models having their hair and make-up done in the
window of the shop, then changing
in a booth and modelling in and out of the window.
The aim of the day was not only to help raise awareness of both independent
designers in the midlands,
but the Davenport shop of originality,
as an outlet for independents fashion designers, illustrators and
craftsmen.

If anybody hasn't visited the shop I would definitely recommend
having a look. There are some stunning
paintings and illustrations, corsets and underwear by Eternal Spirits,
and some fantastic cut out art. All by
local people.
Their address is 8 Flying Horse Walk, Nottingham, NG1 2HN.

In total there was around 15 models, 4 fashion/underwear designers,
and a couple of jewellery designers.

I had the absolute pleasure of working with models Lhoryn and Beau,
who did an amazing job of modelling two of my pieces.

Here are a few pictures for now, I shall upload the rest later.

Are you a miserable artist?

Came across this on a Tumblr blog
What inspires you.
Thought it was amusing as some of these
things are often true to how I feel.
It's a nice little list for me to keep in mind of things not to do.
And definitely makes me more determined
not to let things stand in my way.

It's always want want want....

Love Love Love
Black Milk Clothing.
If only I could fit my fat arse in to
these then I would probably
buy everything off their website.

I am like a human magpie, I love
anything remotely shiny,
but have found my friends and family
have never shared my enthusiasm
for anything
metallic, sparkly, or anything that has a remote sheen to it.

Anyway back to the point, shiny, patterned and
skull products are just a few
of the things you can find over at
Black Milk Clothing.
What more could you ask for?

I came across these through a friends tumblr,
did some research and hey presto,
a new love was found.

These are probably my favourite of everything,
mainly because anything with
a skull or bones, tend to catch my eye.

Here are some of my other favourites which are currently
on sale here.
Look at those lace suspenders!
And if anybody knows where the boots with
the silver bottoms are from
let me know.

Fake Magazine

Back in March I was approached by
stylist Sophie Benson to
borrow some items from my graduate
collection for an upcoming Magazine
her and friend, Kerry Leslie
were putting together in Birmingham as part of their final
collections.

I happily accepted and I want to say a big thank you to them both
for the opportunity they have given me.

Here is a little about the magazine, which is called Fake.

"F A K E is a collaborative project started by a fashion stylist and a graphic designer. The inspiration behind the publication was discovering that there was a wealth of unseen talent amongst our peers. We realised we had the perfect opportunity to showcase young, gifted, independent creatives. Not only this, there were a lot of interesting projects happening under the radar that we believed deserved more recognition. This magazine serves the purpose of promoting such ventures, taking F A K E in a different direction to other magazines that are found on news stands.

F A K E isn’t what fake is"

I was invited to their launch party which took place
last Friday, 27th May, at the 6/8 Kafe in Birmingham, a lovely
independent coffee house.
The place was full of friends, contributors and people that had asked to come
along, and was a really fun night, with music from Redherrings.

Here are a few snaps that I managed to get on the night.

6/8 Kafe.

Music.

Issue 1: With ribbon and fake sticker

Issue 1: Each packaged in a paper back, with a typed label
Label.

Overall it was a lovely evening and I absolutely love not only the images
of my garments but the magazine itself. I would urge anybody
that is interested in upcoming designers, photographers and other
creatives to give it a read.

For now if you would like more information visit
Their website here and you can follow them on twitter here.
The magazine went on sale yesterday and can be ordered through their website.

Shhh! Couture Design Competition.

On April 25th May Latex company Shhh! Couture,
posted a competition on their
facebook profile for people
to design a 3 piece mini collection.

The winner will win:
  • £35 Gift Voucher
  • Their name on the mini collection - eg. Billybob for Shhh! Couture
  • % of profits from the sale of their designs
  • A mystery prize!
The full brief can be seen just here:
Shhh! Couture Facebook.

After weeks of sitting and drawing different
concepts, and being the perfectionist I am,
I finally came up with designs
that I am quite proud of.

For my concept i designed a range of lingerie pieces,
which can be mixed and matched,
with cut out lace, zips and bows.

I just want to say a good luck to all the entrants,
there are a lot of really strong designs
and amazing talent out their.

Although the winner will be decided by Shhh! couture
and a panel of judges, they
would still like to see peoples thoughts
on each entry.

So why not pop along to facebook and let them
know what you think.

My designs can be seen HERE.
And all other entries in the Design competition folder.

All work and no play...

Mint Siren
Quite a few people ask, so here it is: I have built Mint Siren
from scratch,no loans,no investors, no rich parents... just hard graft,
working multiple jobs, clearing out any savings and sleeping very little for 6 years.
Thanks to all for your support. Our advances is much due to all of you!
I love this little post that Mint Siren creator, Josefine Wing
which was posted on their facebook profile. Just goes to show and makes you stop and think,
that a little determination will go a long long way
and that even though you will need money to start a business it can still
come from your own hard work and dedication
and not just hand outs.

That is not to say that people that had loans and investors
don't work just as hard, but i think that people aren't
willing to work for what they want,
they expect somebody else to help them out, and are
too quick to give up on their dreams.

Hard work really does pay off.
